ADHD
I have a 7 yr old with ADHD. He was diagnosed a little over a year ago. I had always said I wouldn't medicate my kids ... but he needed it. It has been a Godsend. He is not perfect but he has made such an improvement in school.
I have a 10 year old diagnosed with ADHD. We tried therapy first but then went medication route which I never wanted to do either. He's better in school too but sometimes I think he's leaving all the work up to the medication, and not doing his part in the behavior despite all our efforts, charts, plans, discussions, activities etc.. And now I'm worried about how he's going to do when he starts middle school next year.
I was just told recently my 6 old son has ADHD. He becomes very aggressive and can be mean to his classmates, siblings, and myself. Is it normal for children with ADHD at his age to hurt people like this? I'm so stressed. I don't know what to do. He is on strategies. It's fairly new. But I don't think it is helping. I feel so helpless.

My son was aggressive...not toward other people, just angry all the time. And after counseling, behavioral therapy and then to medication, it got better. We realized he was so angry because he knew there was something "different" about himself but could not put words to it. I have been told that it's really difficult to actually diagnose a child with ADHD before the age 9 just because there are a lot of pangs with growing (especially boys); however, it's not impossible. Remain patient, keep your head up and keep the rules strict but also keep your ears open to him. Something that is hard for grown ups to remember - even though we were all kids before too, we tend to forget what it's like to "feel" like a child. I have been reading "The Gift of ADHD" and have also gotten some other ADHD books written just for kids, to help them sort through the things they may be feeling. What is strategies?
